Cinco de Mayo (fifth of May) has become a celebration of Mexican heritage, filled with parties, food, fun, cerveza and, of course, tequila.

The day started as a way to commemorate May 5, 1862 when Mexican soldiers won a hard fought battle over the French in Puebla, Mexico. In honour of this colourful day Blake Henderson, one of our Senior Event Managers and the King of Cocktails has revealed his go to Margarita mix. This recipe produces a adult cocktail, strong and tart; not a spiked fruit punch for drinkers with teenage tastes.

Ingredients

Makes one

60 ml(2 shots) 100 per cent agave tequila, silver (plata) or reposado

A splash of Cointreau

Juice of one lime (reserve one squeezed lime half)

Finely ground sea salt

Method

Three-quarters fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and add the tequila, Cointreau and lime juice. Cover the shaker and shake vigorously (at least 50 times).

Let the shaker sit for 2-3 minutes to ensure the mix is properly chilled

While you wait, pour the salt into a small bowl to a depth of about a centimetre. Rub the reserved squeezed lime half around the rim of a large glass, then dip the rim into the salt to lightly coat the exterior.

If you like add two or the fresh ice cubes to the glass, although the Margarita may also be taken straight, then strain in the contents of the shaker into the glass

Drink and enjoy.
