We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day but how does the rest of the world cook it?

Arepa

Breakfast in Colombia revolves around the arepa, a dense, slightly sweet corn cake that’s served simply with butter or topped with eggs, meat or jam.

 

English breakfast

The fortifying English breakfast includes eggs, sausage, bacon, beans, mushrooms and cooked tomato.

 

Akara

This Nigerian breakfast is deep-fried and made from peeled black-eyed beans and cooked with spices.

 

Continental

The continental breakfast is a light breakfast served commonly in Europe and North America. It typically consists of coffee and bread rolls with butter and jam.

 

Roti Canai

This is an Indian-influenced flatbread found in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore and traditionally served with a curry.

Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak is a coconut milk rice, served with sambal, fried crispy anchovies, toasted peanuts and cucumber. It is commonly found in Malaysia, where it is considered the national dish.

Kaya Toast

Kaya Toast is a well-known snack in Malaysia and Singapore. It is prepared with Kaya, a topping of sugar, coconut milk and eggs, pandan and sometimes butter.

American pancakes are light and fluffy and great for a weekend brunch. Try adding a large handful of fresh blueberries to the batter.

If you’re short on time or fancy something easy to make, there’s not much better than spreading smashed avocado on toast with a poached egg on top.

Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chilli peppers, and onions, often spiced with cumin. It is a staple of Tunisian, Libyan, Algerian, and Egyptian cuisines and is traditionally served in a cast iron pan.

 

Khao Tom

There are two different variations of this Laotian and Thai dessert. One is a sweet version which is seasoned steamed sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. The second is savoury where it is filled with pork fat and mung bean.

Fuul

Served in grainy Egyptian pita bread, fuul consists of cooked and mashed fava beans, often served cold.

 

Congee

Congee is a type of rice porridge of gruel popular in many Asian countries. It is most often served with side dishes; however meat, fish and other flavourings can be added to make it a meal on its own.

 

Huevos Rancheros

Huevos rancheros are a popular breakfast dish consisting with eggs, chillies and peppers in burritos. It makes for a perfect dish if you’ve got a few friends round.
